Russian River Summer Cleanup Float

Come Get Wet at the Russian River Summer Cleanup Float

Float Date: September 16, 2017

As part of the Russian Riverkeeper Annual Russian River Cleanup, The Redwood Empire Chapter of Trout Unlimited (RETU) invites you to participate in a river cleanup day on September 16. After this winter's rains and a lot of summer use, there is a lot of debris in the water that needs to be hauled out. To do the cleanup, we will be working the section from Vacation Beach dam downstream to Monte Rio boat ramp.

We need people with rafts, canoes and driftboats with personal flotation devices - Vacation beach dam has limited parking and a boat launch. We also need people willing to be paddlers in boats. Volunteers signing up to paddle/float must be experienced paddlers, able to swim, and 18 or over.

All volunteers should bring a hat, sunscreen, water, lunch and a change of clothes. Upon registration, we will be in touch with any additional pertinent details for the day.

Questions? Contact Erik Young via email, twosharks@gmail.com

Sign up through Eventbrite with the following instructions to join RETU for the Vacation Beach to Monte Rio boat launch ticket selection.

Dan Hubacker is Program Director for the United Anglers of Casa Grande (www.uacg.org ). This program includes a high school educational curriculum that operates a 35,000-gallon state-of- the-art salmon hatchery that is located on the campus of Casa Grande High School, in Petaluma, California, near the Petaluma River. It is the only one of its kind in the country, and can serve as an example of what is possible in educating and motivating high school students through a rigorous watershed science-based curriculum. In addition, the program does significant conservation in the Petaluma River watershed. Dan will talk about the program, its hopes for the future, and current opportunities for volunteers.

The Laguna de Santa Rosa is a wetland area that drains 254 miles in Sonoma County. It is of critical importance to many species, including salmon and steelhead. Wendy Trowbridge is Director of Restoration and Conservation Science Programs for the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation ( www.lagunadesantarosa.org); and John Green is Lead Scientist/Project Director for the Gold Ridge Conservation District ( www.goldridgercd.org ). They will discuss the Laguna and its impact on salmonids. What do we know? What do we not know? They will also speak about an opportunity to increase our understanding of this watershed and the behavior of salmonids as they transit through it.

There will also be a short presentation about the Sonoma County Steelhead in the Classroom program. Learn about this educational effort that brings aquariums and steelhead eggs directly into elementary school classrooms around Sonoma County, where the students can watch them hatch and grow. Do you want to have a direct impact on instilling a love of watersheds and fish through a classroom hands-on learning program? This is an opportunity for you!
